Yesterday we spoke of the Pack. Today, we look at the Wolf in the mirror.
The Bulgarians have a saying that cuts through the noise of corporate titles and LinkedIn profiles: “If you wish to know a person, give them authority.”
Authority is a chemical reaction. It acts as a solvent. It dissolves the mask of "personality" and reveals the character underneath. For the weak, authority dissolves humility and reveals EGO. For the strong, it acts as a catalyst, amplifying Noblesse Oblige and turning focus outward toward the protection of the Pack.
Authority doesn't change you; it unmasks you.
In the high-stakes environment of the C-Suite, rank is often a shield for insecurity. We must apply that same clarity—and acknowledge our own biases—within our leadership.
The Ego Trap : Are you using your rank to win the argument, or to find the truth? Machiavelli warned that a leader must be a Fox to find the snares. If you use authority to silence the "scouts" on the front lines because they challenge your worldview, you are not powerful; you are blind. A true Field Commander knows that individual brilliance is capped. Your authority exists solely to clear the path for the Pack. If the Wolf is weak, the Pack suffers. If the Wolf is selfish, the Pack scatters.
The Thursday Directive: Command thy Self ( i.e. Self-awarness)
Marcus Aurelius wrote: "The directing mind is that which wakes itself, adapts itself, and makes itself of whatever nature it wishes." Remember, he is OG BAS (Bad Ass Stoic). He is saying that your circumstances don't define your character... your intent does.
- Observe Impact: Watch the room when you enter today. Do they tighten up (Fear of your Rank), or do they lean in (Trust in your Character)?
- Orient to Service: Authority is a loan, not a gift. Find one place where your "rank" can remove an obstacle for a subordinate.
- Act with Grace: Kipling’s Law is reciprocal. The strength of the Wolf is the Pack. You are only as strong and secure as the team you build. Revenue, Retention, Recruiting.
Authority is a heavy mantle. Wear it with grace, or it will eventually crush you.
